Indiana University Bands Venues Stores Eat & Drink Around Town

Town profile video player

Hoagy Carmichael has called southern Indiana's Bloomington home; John Mellencamp still does. Bloomington's many festivals bring a wide variety of musicians from around the world. Bill Monroe, Elvis and Dylan have all barnstormed through, and despite its small size, Bloomington remains an essential stop for national tours.

Live music can regularly be found in bars and clubs, ranging from mainstream touring rock and hip-hop acts at the Bluebird to reggae and fiddling at Max’s Place. The Jacobs School produces free classical and jazz performances, including work by faculty such as David Baker and violin virtuoso Joshua Bell. Meanwhile, you can still hear spontaneous bluegrass jam sessions in restaurants and wander into an explosive avant-garde basement show. It may be a small town, but Bloomington is also a world-class music smorgasbord. -Peter Chen
